Especially for small businesses, pay per click is a good advertising means where you can actually compete with large competitors.
Aside from pay per click marketing there are also other means like affiliate marketing, blogging and search engine optimization, although the most popular seems to be the pay per click marketing and search engine optimization.
Business owners might find pay per click marketing different from the common advertising techniques in radio, television or in print because in pay per click, you will not pay for the size of your ad or how many times it appeared on TV, but you will pay only for every interested user that will click on your ad.
To illustrate, if an owner of an online gift shop wants to advertise the business using pay per click, the first thing he has to do is find websites that are related to his business like wedding sites or websites that talk about gifts. He will then contact the owners of these websites and agree if they can post his ad on a certain spot on the site. Both parties will then agree on the cost of a click.
When online users type a keyword related to online gift shop, perhaps an online user will search for 'wedding gifts,' those websites where the business owner has posted his ad will appear on the list. When online surfers click on these websites and get interested in the ad or banner of that online gift shop, they will then be redirected to the online gift shop's website. This is the time the owner of that online gift shop will pay the owner of the website the agreed amount for that click.
What is appealing with this advertising tool is that, it draws already interested customers into your website. Pay per click actually targets in bringing potential customers and those who are looking for your product into your site, thus the more clicks you have, the more potential customers you have for your business.
